Alumni Spotlight - Jodi Stevens

Jodi Stevens - BFA Musical Theatre Graduate - 1990

Where are you from?
I was born in New Jersey and grew up in Northern Ca. Northbrook Ill.,  and Bryn Mawr, Pa. Lived in NYC for 10 or so years before moving to LA, and now residing in Weston Ct.

Why did you choose Penn State?
When I came to interview at penn state, Doug Cook made me feel like this was a place where I would get the experience and complete immersion  in theatre that I had hoped for.

I was a sophomore at PSU, when Helen Manfull assigned me to young freshman, Debbie Damp, she's remained my "little sister" ever since. Debbie graduated in 1991. She has an amazing commercial career and a wonderful cabaret performer.)

Amazing experience? This may not have been, "the Best time ever!" But it was an amazing lesson. I was nominated for an Irene Ryan Scholarship, from a performance in a Moliere's The Imaginary Invalid,  I learned from Marilyn Henry, a guest lecturer, any monologue or song selection for an audition or competition, no matter how connected you feel to a part, if you're not "right" for that part, don't use it to show your best work! The lesson served me well, having had it in college, before I got to New York. This lesson served me in a very practical way.

Photos from production of Annie
(Annie the Musical originated at the Goodspeed Opera House, East Haddam, Ct in 1997, this was 20th Anniversary Production, directed by its creator, Martin Charnin. I had the best time playing Lily St. Regis to Bobby Clark's Rooster. Here I realized I was working with Chicago veteran actress, Alene Robertson. When I was a kid, living in Chicago, the first musical I ever saw was Kismet, at Lincolnshire Theatre and it starred Alene Robertson.)
