The B.F.A. program in Design and Technology at Penn State is an intensive pre-professional training program that prepares our students to join the professional field or to gain admittance to graduate school.
While Penn State's committment to general education provides our students with the opportunity to attain a broad-based liberal arts education - all of our students take classes in math, science, the social and behavioral sciences, literature, history, and the arts - our B.F.A. curriculum offers our students extensive training in every area of Design and Technology according to their area(s) of specialization.
Our students can choose any one or two of the following areas of specialization:
- Lighting Design
- Sound Design
- Costume Design
- Set Design
- Scenic Technology
Excellent training facilities, hands-on experience, and our exceptional faculty and staff are the strengths of our B.F.A. program in Design and Technology. Challenging production assignments and exciting design opportunities are a fundamental component of our students' experience at Penn State.
Additionally, Penn State's B.F.A. program has one of the largest student chapters in USITT and each year a group of our Design and Technology students attend the USITT conference with financial support from the School of Theatre and UPAC.
"When looking at colleges, the Penn State School of Theatre was one of the few places where I felt like I could have intensive theatre training and a true 'traditional' college experience at the same time. The faculty have tons of experience and connections to share, and were truly invested in furthering my career in theatre to a professional level. I now work (too much!) in New York City as an audio engineer and sound designer." - Stephanie Riddle, B.F.A. Design and Technology, Sound Emphasis Graduate
