Message from John Simpkins, August 2018

Greetings from Penn State! Things are as busy as ever as we kick off the beginning of the 25thanniversary year of Penn State Musical Theatre! Thirteen incoming students – all interesting, talented, and terrific humans –  join us as we head into a very exciting year. Our fall even includes a very special opportunity for the entire program to join the Blue Band for a halftime show at the Ohio State game on September 29!

Any anniversary provides a moment to both look back and forward. As I look to the past – and with every alum that I have the pleasure to meet – I am constantly reminded of the power and pride that Penn State Musical Theatre has always displayed to the world. Our alumni that are working in the theatre industry – and those whose paths have taken them to other jobs, lives, cities, and passions – all display a common characteristic.  To my students, I constantly refer to this as being a “good human.” I’m happy and proud to report in this anniversary year that “good human” is still the leading trait of our fine young people in the program. They continue the legacy that came before them – and their potential, as well as that of the program’s, is unlimited.

Looking forward – you’ll see throughout the course of this newsletter that we are welcoming new people, new initiatives, and new ideas all throughout the program this fall. I would encourage you to read all about these new goings-on that we are confident will add to the incredible training that has always been a hallmark of the program. Think of them as a glimpse of the next 25 years! And we’re just getting started!

To our alumni – thank you for all you continue to do for the program. Thank you for the mentorship you provide the young alums, for the couches you lend on student trips to NYC, for the introductions you broker to your network of professionals, and for your warmth and welcoming spirit as we graduate our seniors each year!

To our philanthropic family – thank you for believing in the program and the students. Thank you for the friendship you show all of us. And thank you for listening to some innovative ideas for the future and having the confidence in what we are doing to support them!

To our parent and friend community – thank you for coming alongside the program in every way that I know about as well as all the ways I don’t see. Your support for young people in their journey is remarkable.

To the countless people that helped build the program over the first nearly 25 years – thank you for your leadership, your vision, your courage, and your dreams.

To our students, faculty, and staff – thank you for everything you do every day to make Penn State Musical Theatre a very special place. I hope you got some rest this summer – it’s time to get to work!

Please keep watching for ways we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary – it’s a yearlong celebration and we hope you will join us on campus, in NYC, or anywhere else that we can celebrate this unique and wonderful program that is Penn State Musical Theatre!
