Andrew Belser comes to Penn State from the University of North Carolina Wilmington where he was Chair of the Department of Theatre. Belser’s teaching and directing career has centered on movement forms, voice/breath work, and interdisciplinary theatre approaches. He is the founding Artistic Director The Gravity Project, a professional theatre company, performance research center, and international new work incubator. He was awarded the Carnegie 2003 Pennsylvania Professor of the Year award while a faculty member at Juniata College. Belser has served as an evaluator for the Fulbright Senior Specialist program and was a Doris Duke Fellow at the Shannon Leadership Institute at the Amherst Wilder Foundation.

Prof. Belser is a Master Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework®  and is a lead teacher/evaluator in the certification programs of the work NY, LA, London, and Barcelona. He is a certified teacher of Open Source Forms, a movement training mode related to Skinner Releasing. For 25 years,he has taught and worked with the founders and prominent teachers of Contact Improvisation. Prof. Belser teaches movement, voice, and acting. His is currently researching in the areas of neurosensory perception, art/science collaborations, and the integration of movement and voice pedagogies into actor training.

Prof. Belser’s directing work has included: devising new work, reimagining classic texts in lush movement and image contexts, and premiering works by contemporary playwrights. Belser also mentors and directs inter-disciplinary solo work with professional artists. His work with artists in The Gravity Project company continues with the 2014 adaptation of Annie Dillard's Pulitzer Prize-winning book Pilgrim at Tinker Creek.
