M.F.A. Acting Events


The Head of the MFA Acting Program, Steve Broadnax III, is directing Katori Hall’s Mountaintop at People’s Light Theatre in Malvern, Pennsylvania this fall. Penn State MFA acting program alumni, Patrese McClain, is under the direction of Mr. Broadnax III on the stage. The current 1st and 2nd year MFA actors have just traveled to Malvern to witness this experience and support. 1st Years to New York

- The MFA acting program went to NYC on January 30th 2016 with the Head of Acting at Penn State’s School of Theatre, Richard Robichaux, to see Bill Irwin and David Shiner in their show Old Hats at the Signature Theatre. Skeleton Crew

- The Penn State School of Theatre has 2 faculty on Off Broadway right now at the Atlantic Stage Theatre. Skeleton Crew, written by Dominique Morisseau and Directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson has been assistant directed by our Head of MFA Acting Program, Steve Broadnax, and starring our own acting associate professor Wendell B. Franklin. We are extremely proud to have such esteemed Penn State faculty that is consistently working in the theatre world. 1st Noel at the Historic Apollo Theatre

- On December 15th, 2015, the MFA Actors took a road trip to finish off their semester. The first stop was to New York to see 1st Noel, where the Head of the MFA Acting Program at Penn State’s School of Theatre, Steve Broadnax, directed a musical at the Historic Apollo Theatre in Harlem for the first time. The School of Theatre’s design team and students were also able to join with the Classical Theatre of Harlem in producing this project. Tim Miller

- October 23rd-26th, 2015. Award winning solo performer comes in to do a 4-day intensive workshop on body mapping. The 1st and the 3rd years will participate and perform on the last day in front of an audience in the theatre building. Check out more from Tim Miller at www.timmillerperformer.com

Gaga Movement

-October 23rd, 2015. The 1st year MFA actors were led by Maree Remalia in a Gaga movement workshop. Maree is a choreographer, performer and teacher facilitating movement experiences with individuals from a broad range of backgrounds. Gaga is the movement language developed by Ohad Naharin out of Israel and has the eastern acclaim in comparison to the more western Yoga. - On October 17th, 2015. The 1st and 3rd  year MFA Actors took a road trip to NYC to see Barbeque, written by Robert O’Hara and staring Kim Wayans and Constance Shulman at The Public Theatre. Look for more from The Public Theatre at http://publictheater.org/

I.D. Tour

- 1st and 2nd Weekend in October. The 3rd year MFA actors travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to perform the latest commissioned new work by NSankou Njikam at New Horizon Theatre for the 2nd weekend in a row. For our current season and tickets, please visit www.theatre.psu.edu

Keegan-Michael Key

- October 8th, 2015. Actor, Comedian, and Penn State MFA Alumni Keegan-Michael Key from Comedy Central and Key and Peele travels to Penn State as Homecoming Honoree King. I.D. Opens

-September 11th, 2015.Penn State’s School of Theatre commissions playwright NSankou Njikam for its now 3rd year MFA acting class. This Hip-Hop Theatre Performance piece was written exclusively for and about these actors and has its opening night at the Penn State Downtown Theatre Center. This play was also directed by Steve Broadnax, the Head of the MFA Acting Program at Penn State, and choreographed by Kikora Franklin.
