The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre is one of several professional training programs offered by the School of Theatre at Penn State. The program’s mission is simple -  to train students so that they may compete successfully in the professional musical theatre. Students are recruited nationally and internationally and are admitted into this highly selective program after a rigorous audition process. Throughout their time at Penn State they share a positive, professional, and dedicated approach to the work as artists and humans that allows them to enter the Industry with the best chance of success.

Our faculty is made up of artists dedicated to both the profession of theatre performance and musical theatre training. As working actors, dancers, music directors, choreographers, and directors, we bring our students years of Broadway, national tour, regional theatre, and film and television experience. With a ratio of ten faculty to forty-eight students, the training is individualized, specific, and demanding.

To continue leading the way into 21st Century training, Penn State Musical Theatre is currently implementing new programs specific to the modern day musical theatre performer.  One such program is the New Musicals Initiative – where professional award-winning writers are commissioned to write specifically for each graduating class.  The writers work with the students throughout their senior year – and the project culminates in readings and concerts on campus and in NYC.  Joe Iconis’ Love in Hate Nation was the first such commission in 2016-2017.  Sarah Schlesinger and Mike Reid are under commission for the 2017-2018 senior class.
