Musical Theatre M.F.A. - Voice Pedagogy




The successful candidate for this degree will already possess a strong background in music and singing technique, some degree of experience in teaching voice and performing and above all a passion for musical theatre as an art form. The statement of purpose (no more than two pages) should include a teaching philosophy, an overview of teaching experience and future goals. An accompanying DVD or CD should include a variety of samples of recent singing including Golden Age musical theatre and/or classical styles.

If your initial application packet raises sufficient interest from the selection committee we will ask you for an on-campus audition and interview. At that time we will also ask you to submit two letters of recommendation from people who know your teaching and/or professional work.

If you are invited for an on-campus audition, the procedure will be as follows:

1. Singing audition- offer 6 selections including 1 operetta, 1 golden age musical theatre, 1 contemporary musical theatre, 2 foreign language classical art songs in different languages and an additional selection of the applicant’s choosing.

2.Teaching audition- teach 2-3 students, male and female, in musical theatre and/or classical repertoire demonstrating piano skills.

3. Mini voice lesson with member(s) of the voice faculty.

4.  Interview with faculty about background, career goals, etc.

Students should NOT apply to the Graduate School until completing this process
